Short answer: Aliphatic TPU is generally preferred for the exposed outer layer of paint protection film because its polymer structure is more resistant to ultraviolet-driven yellowing than aromatic TPU. That does not make every aliphatic film equal: coating chemistry, adhesive design, extrusion quality, storage and installation all affect the finished PPF. Buyers should compare complete film systems and documented test methods rather than choosing on the TPU name alone.
Both materials are thermoplastic polyurethane, but they use different isocyanate families. Aliphatic structures are designed to remain more stable when exposed to light. Aromatic structures can absorb UV energy more readily, which may lead to yellowing or changes in appearance. The practical difference is most visible in clear exterior films where color stability is important.
| Decision factor | Aliphatic TPU | Aromatic TPU |
|---|---|---|
| Typical outdoor use | Preferred for clear, exposed PPF | More suitable where UV appearance is not the primary requirement |
| Yellowing resistance | Generally higher | Generally lower under prolonged UV exposure |
| Cost position | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Evaluation need | Test the complete film, topcoat and adhesive system | |
TPU grade influences elongation and recovery, but installation behavior also depends on film thickness, topcoat friction, adhesive initial tack and the geometry of the panel. A product that stretches easily is not automatically easier to install if it distorts, lifts at edges or retains excessive adhesive marks. Evaluate samples on representative curved panels before confirming a specification.
The TPU carrier is only one layer in PPF. The topcoat controls surface stain resistance, gloss, water behavior and fine-scratch recovery, while the adhesive affects repositioning, wet-out and long-term bonding. Compatibility problems can cause haze, delamination, edge lifting or uneven appearance even when the base TPU is suitable.
This page provides general material-selection guidance. It does not claim a Manshuo laboratory result or a guaranteed service life. Performance should be verified against the supplier’s current technical data, agreed test methods, production samples and the intended climate. Results can vary with installation, maintenance, chemical exposure and storage.
No. It is generally more resistant to UV-driven yellowing, but no transparent polymer system is unaffected by unlimited outdoor exposure. Climate, topcoat, maintenance and contamination still matter.
Not automatically. It is usually the stronger choice for clear exterior PPF, but the correct value decision depends on the target market, verified construction and complete installed performance.
Request current technical data, representative samples, agreed test methods, packaging specifications and batch inspection records relevant to the order.
